What is a power bank?

USB Power Banks, otherwise known as external battery chargers or power bars, are new portable devices that can recharge smartphones and other mobile tech on the go, when there is no available main power nearby. They are available in various models and styles and come in a range of power capacities..

What is mAh?

A unit for measuring electric power over time. mAh is commonly used to describe the total amount of energy a battery can store at one time. A battery rated for more mAh will power a phone for a longer amount of time, given the same usage pattern. The trade-off is that batteries with more mAh are generally also physically larger and heavier.

How Long Will it Take for a Power Bank to Charge my Phone?

It depends on the battery capacity of the power bank as well as the battery capacity of the device you are charging. No matter its capacity all power banks will deliver the same amount of charge to your device in 1 hour. So if you have two phones that are exactly the same, one is being charged by a 2200mAh power bank and the other is being charged by a 6600mAh power bank, both will receive the same amount of charge at the end of an hour. The only difference is that the 2200mAh will have less charge left compared to the 6600mAh power bank.

How Long Will it Take to Charge the Power Bank Itself?

The charging time of your Power Bank is very much dependent on its input current and capacity. Put simply, a 2200mAh power bank may take only 2‐3 hours to charge, whereas a 6600mAh power bank may take 3‐5 hours to charge. A power bank can be charged using a wall charger or a computer with a USB cable. The wall charger will charge the power bank at a faster rate than the computer as computers have a smaller charging output.

What capacity power bank do I need?

A Power Bank's capacity is measured in mAh (milliamp hours). To fully recharge a device, you would need a power bank with the same or greater mAh than the device in question. A Power bank with a lesser mAh will still recharge your mobile device but only partially.

Can a 12000mAh power bank charge a 1500mAh capacity phone 8 times?

Probably not, there are many factors involved in doing this calculation. A rule of thumb is (mAh * conversion rate * phone battery health) / phone capacity = total charge times

Conversion rate is the remaining percentage of the battery after the battery heat and circuit loss. phone battery health deteriorates over time, in general newer batteries last longer, in the formula express this as a percentage

For example given the mAh in the question and a conversion and battery health rate of 80% each the formula looks like: (12000 x 0.8 x 0.8) / 1500 = 5.12 charge times

How do I charge my power bank?

Always refer to the manual that came with your particular bank, but in general they come with a power cable and you plug it into a wall socket like any other device, or charge it via USB from your laptop.

What’s the different between 18650 and Li-Polymer type power banks?

18650 batteries are of a fixed size, produce more heat, have a higher discharge rate, lose durability quicker, but also cheaper to manufacture. Li-Polymer batteries have a flexible size and shape, safer, lower discharge rate, and more durable, but also more expensive.

Are power banks safe?

Yes. However like any battery based system they have the capacity to catch fire under the right conditions. You are extremely unlikely to reach those conditions in normal, everyday life. Just don't throw your power bank into a campfire and you should be OK.
